Keep the same subheadings in your final paper.

Although there is not a set formula to follow when writing a film review, the genre does have certain common elements that most film reviews include. Remember that the class is looking at five types of films on aging. You will be sharing a type of film with other students so makes sure that your review stands out. The review will focus on GERONTOLOGY. This is not a film-appreciation review, but a gerontology-appreciation review.

1) Introduction (5%)

In the opening of your review, provide some basic information about the film. You may include the film’s name, year, director, screenwriter, and major actors. Your introduction should then begin to evaluate the film, and it should allude to the central concept of the review. A film review does not have to contain a thesis or main claim, but it should focus on a central analysis and assessment. Describe what is unique about your specific film from the others in your group.

2) Plot Summary (5%)

Do not worry about spoiler alerts. Provide a plot summary. Describe in detail the narrative arc. The middle plot, all the intrigues and peaks, and troughs of the plot. The final section, how they conclude the film. Keep this brief and use specific details to help explain the twists and turns of the film. After describing the plot, describe the characters, and especially the importance of the older adult/s. How the film starts to set up the characters. Why is the older adult important for the film. What assumptions are being made about older adults?

3) Description (10%)

While the plot summary will give the reader a general sense of what the film is about, including a more detailed description of the key points of the film. Summarize the moral of the story (not the narrative arc but the underlying story) describe this in detail.

4) Theory (75%)

THIS IS THE MAIN ASPECT OF THE PAPER AND CARRIES THE MOST POINTS

The analysis is unique for this class in that you will focus on the aging component of the film. There have to be two theories incorporated into the analyses. Two gerontological theories that in your view explain the story of the film. Select your two theories, describe them briefly, what they are about and who introduced them, and then show how the film corresponds to these two theories sequentially. One theory after another and not together.

This is the main component of your review.

Some questions to ask. If the film’s protagonist was a younger person and it would still be an interesting movie then the film relies on the story rather than the character. But if the film depends upon the character being an older adult then the film is resting on the fact that the audience would empathize with an older character. What assumptions are being made about older people? What are the “older” characteristics highlighted? Why are they seen as positive/negative according to the theory you have selected. Refer 3-5 events in the film to each theory. Substantiate why you think the theory explains the storyline of the film (or not.)

5) Conclusion/Evaluation (5%)

The closing of your film review should remind the reader of your general thoughts and impressions of the film. You may also implicitly or explicitly say whether you believe that the film achieved its aim (refer to the theory). Present one or two key examples from the film that stands out.
